Frequently Asked Questions

Hopefully we can get all of your questions answered here. Otherwise, don't hesitate to fill out our Contact form or speak to an office person in-person!

Do I have to have pottery knowledge to use the space at KC Art Van Gogh?

No! Absolutely not! We require everyone to complete an introductory training guide that goes over our rules and regulations so we are all on the same page. Optionally, there are also going to be basic pottery modules you can complete before beginning. After the modules, you're able to jump right in!

How do I know what membership tier to choose?

Anyone can choose the daily pass, daisy, or terrarium tier. Choose the plan that makes the most sense for you based on how often you plan to come and how much pottery you will make! The only tier that has requirements is the red rose tier. Because this tier grants the artist with more freedom to use the space, the artist must have a demonstrated knowledge of ceramics. You must demonstrate the ability to work independently, either through taking classes offered through KC Art Van Gogh, or having equivalent experience elsewhere.

Why is there a fee to use the space, and fire the kiln, and use the glaze?

We are a community art studio, aiming to empower artists and provide a safe space to learn and grow. However, we do also have to maintain our space, so we can't do it for free. We wish we could! If you have financial burdens or concerns, please don't hesitate to talk to a staff member about alternative payment methods or scholarships. We also support our non-profit Activation Impact Maker (AIM), so any profits beyond our basic bills go to support AIM!

Can minors be unaccompanied in the space?

No. For the safety of the minor, he/she/they must be accompanied by an adult at all times. If the minor is here during our after school art club, he/she/they will be monitored by staff at all times. The adult accompanying the minor is responsible for ensuring that the minor is respectful, rule following, and kind in our shared space.

Can I bring a piece I made at home to be fired here?

Yes! We encourage you to make wherever you are comfortable! We require a few things from outside pieces. First, they will all be subject to the regular pricing during a firing. Second, the artist understands that kiln accidents do happen and it is not the responsibility of KC Art Van Gogh if one does happen. Lastly, we require the label of the clay and glaze to be brought in or otherwise displayed on the intake of the items. This step is crucial to making sure that the piece is a good fit for our kiln and it gets fired properly. If a piece is not a good fit for the kiln and improper documentation of materials is provided, the artist may be responsible for any damages that occur with the kiln.

Can I bring a piece that has already been bisque fired and use KC Art Van Gogh glaze?

Yes! The same requirements for bringing a piece from home will apply. We need proof that it is bisqueware meant to be fired in a glaze firing to cone 6. If it fails in the kiln and damages the kiln, you may be responsible for damages. Otherwise, a palette of 5 glazes is $8 and each additional glaze can be added on for $2.

We will also offer bisqueware for purchase to paint (coming soon) and pottery painting parties (coming soon).

Do I have to be a member or pay for a daily pass to take classes?

Nope! The class fees include everything needed to make and fire a piece. If you want to work on a piece outside of the class time, you will have to purchase a daily pass or membership to do so. All class pieces will get glazes in the glaze you select during the class if applicable, otherwise in a clear glaze.

Can I rent extra shelves, or rent a shelf without being on the highest tier?

Yes. You can rent a personal shelf no matter what tier you're on, or add on another shelf if you're on the Red Rose tier, for $100/month.

What equipment can I use?

All artists are able to use the tables, wedging table, and any hand tools we have. Before being able to use the wheels, you must either have taken a wheel throwing class through KC Art Van Gogh, or you must demonstrate working knowledge to a staff member beforehand. All other equipment will require a sign-off from a trained office staff member.

Can I sand my pottery or spray glaze inside of KC Art Van Gogh?

NO! Absolutely no sanding or spraying is permitted and it will not be tolerated. Not only are these messy, they also present health hazards to yourself and everyone around you. Even wet sanding is not allowed inside of KC Art Van Gogh. Please take all sanding and spraying outside in a designated area or home with you.

Can I teach a class?

Yes! Come on in and talk to one of our office staff and we can discuss what it would look like for you to teach a class and if you'd be good fit.
